Freddy Krueger will be receiving a makeover in the in-the-works remake of Nightmare On Elm Street.

But, don't worry horror fans, producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form promise to keep the spirit of the iconic dreamkiller intact.

Form said:

"Freddy is an iconic character like Jason, and when we've made these movies we haven't deviated from the way [the characters] look. Jason and Leatherface look the same and I'm sure with Freddy it'll hold true. I do think we can safely say that in Texas Chainsaw the chainsaw was the weapon, in Friday the machete is the weapon for Jason, and in Nightmare there is no changing the glove."

He jokingly added, "There will be the sweater. We're not going to have him coming out in an Izod."

They will not, however, be employing the same actor to portray Freddy, saying that the original's Robert Englund is too old for the part, and the "new version of the character needs a new energy."

But the biggest challenge will be devising Freddy's crimes. In the original, the kids uncovered them without the use of Google. They want to make the discovery fit the times.

The other challenge is finding a director (since one is not yet attached) whose visual style can make the transitions through the dreams as seamless as possible.

Hope they find one soon!

Production is scheduled to begin in the spring in the suburbs of Chicago.

US fast-food giant McDonald's said Monday its 2008 net profit soared 80 percent from a year, lifted by growing demand from consumers seeking low-cost meals in a deepening global recession.

Net profit for the full year totaled 4.3 billion dollars, compared with 2.3 billion in 2007, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said in a statement.

Excluding exceptional items, earnings per share were 3.76 dollars, widely exceeding consensus market forecasts of 3.63 dollars.

The robust annual results came despite a sharp 23 percent decline in fourth-quarter net profit to 985 million dollars, from 1.273 billion in the 2007 fourth quarter. Fourth-quarter earnings per share were 87 cents, above expectations of 83 cents.

"2008 was a strong year for McDonald's," chief executive Jim Skinnersaid in the statement.

"Through our strategic focus on menu choice, food quality and value, the average number of customers served per day increased to more than 58 million in 2008."

The global fast-food giant said it saw growth in comparable sales and customer counts across all segment for ever quarter, and double-digit growth in operating income for the final quarter and the year.

Global comparable sales in 2008 increased 6.9 percent. That included rises of 4.0 percent in the United States, 8.5 percent in Europe, and 9.0 percent in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa, the company said.

Cost-focused companies such as McDonald's and budget retailers generally have weathered the global financial crisis better than others as consumers seek ways to stretch their dollars.

Katie Stam always dreamed of becoming Miss America, but she bypassed the kiddie pageants and waited until she was more mature and sure of herself. Her view of Miss America changed in that time too, and made her want her new title even more.

A day after Stam was crowned Miss America 2009, she told The Associated Press that as a little girl, she considered Miss America more of a figure than a full-fledged job.

"I literally saw this girl who's living out her wildest dream," Stam said, but that view changed as she aged. "As soon as I found out the job description of Miss America, it only attracted me further."

The platform for the 22-year-old University of Indianapolis student is community service, and she says she's eager to start in that role. She planned to fly to New York later Sunday for a series of media interviews about her win.

"It starts right away," Stam said. "Miss America - being the goodwill ambassador for the Children's Miracle Network - that job, that position was laid in my hands the moment they put the crown on my head."

Reigning Miss Americas become spokeswomen for various causes and charities, including the Children's Miracle Network, a partner to the pageant.

Of those responsibilities, Stam said, "I can't wait to get started."

Stam overcame 51 other contestants, a throat infection and laryngitis Saturday night to win the crown. She's the first winner from Indiana in the 88-year pageant.

"My state deserves it," said Stam, whose hometown is Seymour.

She said she wasn't a lifelong pageant contestant, entering her first at age 15.

"I wanted to make sure that I knew who I was and knew what I had to offer, so I was a freshman in high school," Stam said. "I didn't do any of the kiddie pageants because, like I said, I wanted to wait."

Stam rose to the top of the field after strutting in a black bikini and an off-the-shoulder, white lace evening gown, then singing "Via Dolorosa" and denouncing the use of performance-enhancing drugs among professional athletes. Along with the title, Stam won a $50,000 scholarship.

First runner-up Miss Georgia Chasity Hardman took home a $25,000 scholarship.

Stam said she still hopes to pursue another childhood dream - becoming a television news anchor - after her one-year reign as Miss America ends. She was one semester away from finishing her bachelor's degree in communications, but didn't know exactly when she would graduate because of her new duties, she said.

"Who knows what kind of opportunities will be ahead of me after my year as Miss America, but I can't wait," Stam said. "It's a dream and a goal of mine that I've had for a long time, and I can't wait to pursue that."

Harry, 24, began intensive training to become an Army Air Corps helicopter pilot on Monday while Chelsy, 23, is reportedly studying a post-graduate law course at Leeds University.

They have split just weeks after holidaying together, royal sources said last night.

Sources confirmed the couple had parted after the story appeared on the News of the World website.

The newspaper said it was not known what caused the break-up but that friends of Chelsy have said the time the pair spent apart and Harry's lifestyle were to blame.

The report claims it was the decision of the prince's girlfriend to end the relationship.

A royal source confirmed last night that the pair had split up but said the separation was amicable and that they remained friends. The source said the couple had reached the stage in their careers where they could find themselves spending less time together.

The break-up comes after the pair spent some of the festive period on holiday in Mauritius.

They began dating in 2004 but three years later broke up for a short period. They were soon back together again but it now appears the relationship is finally over.

The couple are believed to have met through friends in spring 2004, although they were not pictured together until later. At the time, Harry, then 19, was on a double gap year after leaving Eton, travelling to countries including Australia and Argentina.

Miss Davy, who was born in Zimbabwe, would most likely have been completing her education at smart Cheltenham Ladies' College, located close to Harry's father, the Prince of Wales' Highgrove estate. The pretty blonde is the daughter of millionaire hunting safari operator Charles Davy, whose Zimbabwe connections have, in the past, generated media scrutiny.

For almost three years, the pair sustained a long-distance relationship.

After leaving school, Miss Davy began studying at university in Cape Town, while Harry began his military training at Sandhurst in 2005, later becoming a Cornet in the Blues and Royals.

The couple managed to find time for each other, enjoying holidays in places such as Mozambique and Botswana. In an interview to mark his 21st birthday in September 2005, a devoted Harry described his girlfriend as "very special" and "amazing".

The family of Columbo star Peter Falk is set to head to court over control of the actor's affairs after it was revealed he is suffering from Alzheimer's.

Falk's wife of 32 years has filed court papers seeking to block the actor's adopted daughter from being appointed as her father's conservator, saying she had never had a good relationship with him.

Shera Falk filed her papers on Tuesday (local time) in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

The move comes a week before a January 27 hearing on adopted daughter Catherine Falk's petition.

Catherine Falk filed papers on December 12, stating the veteran actor is no longer able to take care of himself because of his deteriorating health and that he should be placed under a conservatorship order to protect him.

In her court filing, Catherine Falk said her father, 81, suffers from Alzheimer's disease and dementia and requires "full-time custodial care for his health and safety."

She said the actor could "easily be deceived into transferring away property" and that a conservatorship would "protect Peter from fraud or undue influence."

However Shera Falk said in her reply that the court "need not take the drastic step of taking away Peter's rights under the guise of a conservatorship."

Her papers also stated if a conservatorship is deemed necessary, she should be appointed.

A further hearing has been scheduled for next month.

Born in New York in 1927, Falk began his acting career on Broadway in 1956, quickly coming to the attention of Hollywood studios.

He was twice nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar, playing a gangster in 1960's Murder Inc and 1961's Pocketful Of Miracles.

Harley Davidson has announced they're laying off 1100 jobs, JP Morgan Chase is shedding 9,200 jobs.

More than one million jobs have been lost in 2008, and the new year isn't expected to be any better.

Expect another million or more job cuts in 2009 even as president-elect Barack Obama's employment initiatives kick in, according to outplacement company Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. Challenger doesn't see "healthy" employment growth until 2013, with moderate gains starting in 2011.

But the downturn has some benefits: Universities should see a big boost in applications as young people look to escape a grim job market, and small to mid-size businesses will have a wealth of talented applicants to choose from as big companies trim ranks - as will the public sector.

And Challenger predicts companies will increasingly use other labour-cost savings strategies as an alternative to mass layoffs: shorter work weeks, forced vacations, salary and hiring freezes, and nixing bonuses.

The health-care sector and construction, which has been suffering amid the real estate collapse, should see more hiring in 2009. Construction-related fields will likely get a boost from Obama's promised investments in infrastructure, says Challenger.

A spokeswoman said: “The format of the show is cleaner with three judges which was not fully appreciated ahead of filming.”

After years as perhaps the most recognisable face of capitalist success and excess, Donald Trump is suddenly bogged down in a string of legal and financial battles across his property and entertainment empire.

From Dubai to Chicago, from Atlantic City to Aberdeen, the host of the US version of The Apprentice is scaling back his ambitions for global domination, trying to fend off furious bankers and facing new questions from political opponents.

These are grim echoes of the past for a man who, during the recession of the early-Nineties, was forced to put large chunks of his business into bankruptcy, and even teetered on the edge of financial ruin. His re-emergence from that disaster is such a source of personal pride that he even sued the author of a book that estimated his wealth in mere millions, rather than billions, of dollars. The official tally – from Forbes magazine, which is the unofficial arbiter of these things – is that Mr Trump was worth $3bn (£2bn) at the last count, but that was before a string of disasters that was still unfolding yesterday.

It emerged that the Trump Organisation and its partners in Dubai were mothballing work on a 62-storey steel and glass skyscraper on one of the palm tree-shaped artificial islands in the Arabian Gulf. The development was meant to be a hotel and residential complex boasting Norman Foster bathtubs and furniture by the Italian designer Poltrona Frau, and Mr Trump had personally earmarked one of the penthouse suites. But demand has collapsed along with the fortunes of the wealthy that had flocked to Dubai in the boom.

Meanwhile, yesterday was also the deadline for Mr Trump's publicly-quoted casinos business to make a $53.1m interest payment – a payment it said it would have to skip because of its mounting financial troubles. Trump Entertainment Resorts' shares are pennies away from zero, the company having lost 99 per cent of its value in two years, a sure sign that investors think it will go bust – again. The firm, which owns three of the most opulent casinos in Atlantic City, the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas, has been in and out of bankruptcy protection twice in the past 20 years, and Mr Trump and the other directors have begun talks with bankers in the hope of saving it. Such is the sensitivity that the company issued a statement declaring that its own death would hardly graze the Trump fortune. It represents just 1 per cent of his personal holdings.

The trouble is that those other real estate interests are also showing strain, given the crumbling property market across the US. In Philadelphia, a Trump Tower with apartments slated to sell for $700,000 and up has been halted until the economy improves. And there is an even bigger mess in Chicago, where Mr Trump has half-built a hotel and condominium complex that will be taller than New York's Empire State Building. He is being sued by Deutsche Bank, which provided loans for the project and says he missed a deadline this month to pay off the remaining $334m. Mr Trump got his own suit in earlier, claiming Deutsche should have allowed an extension because the credit crisis counts as force majeure, equivalent to acts of God.

In Scotland, where he fought for two years to be allowed to build a controversial £1bn golf and luxury homes complex on an unspoilt stretch of the Aberdeenshire coast, members of the Scottish Parliament are questioning if the project will ever now get built. The suggestion is nonsense, George Sorial, the manager of Mr Trump's Aberdeen golf course, said yesterday, since all the tycoon's property interests are standalone businesses, and the Aberdeen golf complex is a long-term project. "Is Mr Trump still a billionaire?" asked Mr Soriel. "That's a silly question. Of course he is."

Late actor Heath Ledger's family gathered at an Australian beach on Friday to remember the star a year after his death.

The actor passed away from an accidental overdose at his New York apartment on January 22.

A year on from the tragedy family members carried out an emotional service on Perth's Cottesloe Beach to remember the star, a day after he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his role as The Joker in "The Dark Knight."

The actor's elder sister Kate released a statement on behalf of the family, which read, "We are still all nursing broken hearts. Like anyone who loses a family member, it has opened our eyes to the intense suffering and painful journey that is death."

And Ledger's half-sister Ashleigh took time out from the service to express her joy at his Oscar nod.

She says, "Although we would love to have him here with us we are so proud and so excited on his behalf. In Heath's words, he had the time of his life portraying The Joker and said that it was the most fun he'd ever had working on a film."

Police are still searching for a gunman who fired shots on a busy subway platform in the heart of downtown Toronto

A busy portion of the city's subway system ground to halt after a 19-year-old was hit by bullets at Osgoode station.

A large section of the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line, from St. George to Union Station, was closed for hours after several shots were fired at Osgoode station shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday.

Police have released a photograph of the suspect, whom they describe as "black with a light complexion, six feet to six feet two inches, approximately 185 pounds, wearing a black parka with fur trim around the hood, black pants and a black Blue Jays hat with the new logo."

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to St. Michael's Hospital with gunshot wounds to the leg and stomach.

Toronto Transit Commission chair Adam Giambrone stressed Friday morning that the subway shooting was unfortunate, but rare, and noted that subway stations and buses are outfitted with about 10,000 security cameras.

The future fleet of about 230 subway cars, the first of which will arrive in the fall, will also be equipped with cameras, further enhancing safety for commuters, said Giambrone.

The Osgoode subway station is located just steps from Osgoode Hall and many of the province's most important courthouses. Hospitals, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and other major tourist attractions dot University Avenue and nearby streets. Toronto City Hall is within walking distance of the subway station

Portland Mayor Sam Adams says he plans to meet with each City Commissioner one-on-one Saturday, according to Randy Leonard. Commissioner Randy Leonard confirmed in a phone conversation Friday evening that he has an appointment to meet with Adams at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Leonard said he did not know what exactly would be discussed at the meeting.

The meetings are not open to the public. Leonard said if the council were to have a quorum it would be open to the public but individual meetings do not fall under the same guidelines.

A couple hundred people showed up in front of city hall Friday evening to show their support for embattled Mayor Sam Adams -- who was not on hand to receive them -- instead spending the day gathering advice on whether or not he should stay in office, according to his staff

Earlier Friday, a group of representatives from Portland's arts, business and civic communities gathered Friday in City Hall to voice their support as picketers shouted at each other outside.

The rallies capped a week of events that included the mayor's revelations that he had a sexual relationship with a teenager in 2005 and lied about it. Leonard ascends if Adams resigns

Adams continued to remain out of the public eye and away from city government even as Portlanders mobilized, supporting and opposing calls for his resignation. Adams told the Willamette Week a resignation decision was coming "within days."

“I'm not sure he can ever get back my loyalty,” Commissioner Randy Leonard told KGW. “What happened though, is Sam asking me to take something at his word or giving me all the information to reach a different conclusion or benefit of the doubt ... I can't do that. “Sam's silence to me is deafening. His complete absence from the building is telling.”

Portland Commissioner Dan Saltzman joined those supporting Adams, calling him "the right man" for the job despite the mayor's admission that he lied about the relationship.

"He has got so many ideas, so many things he cares about in this city. He loves this city," Saltzman said. "And I think he's the mayor that we need at this point to keep this city moving forward in these tough times."

Supporters said Adams was "regaining his confidence."

Pressure on to resign

Groups had formed online in support of the mayor even as a recall effort was also underway at another website.

Support groups grow Adams had not appeared in public since his Tuesday press conference detailing the relationship and cover up.

Several city commissioners refused to comment on the scandal but Saltzman said he doubted their was consensus among officers that Adams should resign.

The mayor's Portland

Online blog was also pulled Thursday. Adams has long stayed in touch with constituents through the blog, but on Thursday the URL linked to a blank page that initially said, "Due to pending legal action these pages are now unavailable." By mid-morning the page was totally blank.

Local papers call for resignation
The Portland Business Journal joined Portland's gay newspaper Just Out and the editorial boards of both the Oregonian newspaper and the Portland Tribune in calling on Adams to resign. The head of the Portland Police Union also joined the call for Adams' resignation.

“Does this set a precedent that every single city employee is now allowed to lie? I think he should resign,” Portland Police Union President Scott Westerman said.

Legal inquiry launched
City Commissioner Randy Leonard called for a third-party investigation to clarify the timing of the sex and if any rules were broken to benefit the mayor and his career. In addition, Oregon Attorney General John Kroger is launching an inquiry into the scandal at the request of Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer and Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk. On Tuesday, Mayor Adams publicly acknowledged having a sexual relationship with Beau Breedlove, a legislative intern he mentored in 2005. In a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Adams apologized to the public for previously lying about it. Adams said it was a serious error in judgement, but he "has no plans to resign." The admission came in response to a Willamette Week story on Monday confirming the affair. The mayor admitted to having sex with Breedlove within a month of his 18th birthday, and that "the affair lasted maybe two months."

Mayor apologizes for lie
“I should have been honest at the time about my true relationship with Beau. I’m deeply sorry I asked Beau to lie on my behalf," Adams said. "This was a serious error on my part. It happened about four years ago, in my personal and professional life, and my job right now is to come clean."

Breedlove has not spokenpublicly since Adams admitted to the affair.

He did release a statement, in which he said:

"Reflecting back, I regret misleading anyone about the nature of the relationship. When the subject first surfaced during the campaign, I was living out-of-state and I did not anticipate the impact it might have on Portland’s mayoral campaign. While my first instinct was to tell the truth, I also wanted to protect Sam Adams’ reputation, considering our valuable friendship."

A state gay rights advocacy group, Basic Rights Oregon, issued a statement Tuesday saying Mayor Adams "exercised poor judgment," but went on to say he had "demonstrated his commitment to (Portland) and its people."

Adams said he intended to immediately make public all e-mail and phone records from the period of the relationship with Breedlove, which the mayor claims occurred during the summer of 2005.

The mayor also said he and Breedlove discussed a relationship prior to the intern's 18th birthday, when Breedlove was still a minor, but that he could not engage in an "inappropriate relationship" with someone legally underage.

Adams was asked repeatedly by the Portland press why voters should trust his judgment now, considering that he had lied through his campaign for mayor.

"I made a mistake ... I did not want to subject Beau to another round of media inquiries. I decided to come clean and tell the truth," the mayor said.

Adams: No plans to resign
Adams pointed to his two-decade career as a public official and asked Portlanders to look closely at his record.

"I messed this one up, but it's an anomaly over the two decades that I've served Oregonians and Portlanders," he said.

Adams said his punishment will be a complete loss of public trust.

Adams acknowledged he had not yet apologized to Breedlove's parents but that he planned to.

He also said that this was not an issue of sexual orientation; rather, it was an issue of a public official lying, in his opinion. "I don't think this is fundamentally an issue about sexual orientation. Other people can debate that," he said.

Adams had denied affair previously
In 2007, Adams said the rumors of the affair were politically motivated and flatly denied the relationship. He also told the public it was a non-sexual relationship.

“I’m not going to go down without a fight because this is not true,” Adams told KGW in September 2007. "This is one of the worst smears you can make against a gay guy. It preys on the homophobic stereotype that gay men cannot be trusted with young people."

Then City Commissioner Adams published an open letter to Portlanders in 2007 denying the charges and calling them "smear tactics."

Adams also said at the time that he did exchange occasional text messages and phone calls while mentoring Breedlove, but he swore he never did anything inappropriate.

Mayor Adams was in the Capitol for Obama's inauguration when word of the scandal broke on Monday. He returned to Portland instead of remaining for the inaugural festivities.

Mayor Adams said the sex scandal had tainted President Barack Obama's inauguration for Portland residents but that it "would have been highly inappropriate for me to stay in Washington."

He admitted that he may have been elected under false pretenses since he had covered up the relationship and avoided answering whether or not Portland would have elected him mayor had the allegations come out prior to Election Day.

Adams has been mayor of Portland since Jan. 1.

Simon Cowell hired the actress-model on a £200,000 contract to add glamour to the hit ITV show. But in an extraordinary U-turn, the star was given the elbow yesterday in a phone call from TV bosses.

Kelly – who is dating rugby ace Danny Cipriani – was said to be “stunned and very angry” over the shock decision. The official line is that a fourth panellist – joining Cowell, Amanda Holden and TV’s Piers Morgan – didn’t work as it slowed down the pace of the show.

But, as the first Manchester auditions wore on last week, it became clear that Kelly, 29, was unsuitable for the role. An insider said: “She simply didn’t have what it takes. There have been a lot of tears and tantrums the past few days. Kelly came breezing in and Amanda, in particular, was very worried. But as soon as the first act came in it was clear that Kelly wasn’t ready.

“You have to think on your feet to come up with something good to say each time. It can be very tough keeping it fresh. Kelly struggled from the start. Simon and the producers tried to give her advice, but it didn’t seem to work.

“She got very stressed and upset as she thought people were having a go and that just made her more nervous. There was an almighty row and it was downhill from there.”

But angry pals of Kelly last night said she was thrown in at the deep end and left to flounder.

“Kelly was given no help whatsoever,” said a friend. “She was effectively hired only hours before she started the job so had no time to prepare.

“Nobody bothered to give her any pointers and she felt frozen out by the rest of the team. They’re very cliquey.” Multi-millionaire Cowell decided to hire Kelly the day before auditions began in a bid to recreate the simmering tension between Dannii Minogue and new judge Cheryl Cole which helped boost ratings on the X Factor.

Ironically, Cowell said last week: “Kelly is great fun – and has absolutely no idea what she’s let herself in for.” The insider added: “Simon quickly realised he had made a mistake and thought it best to cut his losses. He thinks the world of Kelly and knows she is talented.

“He thought she would bring some glamour to the series.

“But he realised that she wasn’t right. He couldn’t let his personal feelings get in the way of the show so everyone decided it was best to call it a day. It’s not as if Kelly was enjoying the experience much herself.”

The winner of Britain’s Got Talent gets £100,000 and the chance to perform for the Queen. Filming continues today in Glasgow for the new series which will be screened on ITV1 in the spring.
